The extraction of a wisdom tooth is one of the most common dental procedures. However, it’s also one that many people fear, often leading those who need the procedure to postpone it. As a result, wisdom teeth may injure the gums by erupting at an angle or only partially breaking through, causing pain or inflammation.
The removal process of a wisdom tooth can take just a few minutes (especially in younger patients, aged 18–20, when the bone is softer) or much longer, depending on the complexity of the case and whether a surgical procedure is required.
Recovery after a simple wisdom tooth extraction usually takes only a few hours, and proper wound care can help speed up healing.
In the case of a surgical extraction, bruising, swelling, and pain may occur. Recovery in such cases takes several days, progresses gradually, and typically follows these stages:
Blood clot formation (first 24 hours)
Reduction of swelling in the mouth/cheeks (2–3 days)
Removal of stitches, if present (7 days)
Reduction of jaw stiffness and pain (7–10 days)
Healing of mild facial bruising (2 weeks)
To speed up recovery, it’s crucial not to dislodge the blood clots that form in the wound during the first 24 hours. Avoid brushing the extraction site, smoking, and drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours, as well as hot beverages, hard foods, and rinsing your mouth.
